Cayla is currently the Director of Nutrition at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. She is originally from Gretna, Nebraska – about 20 miles west of Omaha. She grew up on a farm where her love for animals started. Cayla earned her bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln then continued to Iowa State University, earning a master’s and PhD in Animal Science. She conducted her graduate research at the Omaha zoo from 2013-2018 where she focused on furthering the field of exotic animal nutrition through novel diet development, enrichment through food, and diet’s impact on animal health. Cayla worked in the pet food industry for four years following graduation before returning to the zoo as the Director of Nutrition in September of 2022. Beyond nutrition, Cayla is an advocate for equity and belonging, serving as the zoos Community of Belonging chair and regional diversity liaison with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Outside of work Cayla enjoys cooking and any outdoor adventure with her partner, son, and three dogs.
